Opening Letter
Thursday's king tide arrives at 8:47 AM with considerable authority. The ocean has scheduled its annual demonstration of reach, and parking near the jetty becomes a matter of faith. Connection Club brings two speed-dating evenings to town this week. The 60+ crowd gathers at Humboldt Bay Provisions Thursday; the 38–55ish set takes Phatsy Kline's Saturday. Ramone's in McKinleyville continues to open weekdays at 6:30 AM for those who prefer their mornings with caffeine and conversation.

Weather Report

Lady Humboldt's Pick
Connection Club Speed Dating (Ages 38–55ish)
A series of guided conversations at Phatsy Kline's on Saturday evening. The format promises actual conversation over awkward small talk, with enough structure to keep things moving and enough freedom to let personalities emerge. The age bracket suggests participants who have stories worth telling.

The Five
Good Neighbor Day: America 250 Event
Saturday 16th · 10:00 AM · Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
Trash clean-up at Elk Prairie Campground. Trash bags and grabbers provided. The redwoods have maintained the area for several centuries, but seem gracious about accepting assistance.
Souled American
Wednesday 13th · 7:00 PM · Arcata Miniplex
Slow, soulful, and slightly strange. Chicago trance-roots legends arrive with the sort of experimental folk that makes traditionalists uneasy and everyone else interested.
40 Years of F**kin' Up
Saturday 16th · 8:00 PM · Arcata Miniplex
A documentary about NOFX that will only screen in theaters, which feels exactly like the sort of stubbornness one hopes for from a punk band.
McKinleyville Arts Night
Friday 15th · 6:00 PM · McKinleyville Business Dist.
The third Friday tradition continues. The business district fills with art, conversation, and the sort of purposeful wandering Humboldt does so well.
Comedy Spelling Bee
Tuesday 12th · 8:00 PM · Savage Henry Comedy Club
Free event. Spelling meets stand-up in the rare competition where misspelling a word may still earn applause from the crowd.

Field Notes
Saturday morning's -2.2 feet exposes tidepools that normally require scuba gear to visit. The ocean will return to collect these secrets by noon, but for a few morning hours, the intertidal zone becomes a temporary museum. Visitors drift slowly from pool to pool, discovering small civilizations in the rocks.

Hike of the Week
Arcata Community Forest — Janes Creek Trail
The flat creekside path welcomes strollers, wheelchairs, and anyone who prefers their nature walks without cardiovascular drama. Second-growth redwoods provide reliable shade while Janes Creek maintains a conversational burble year-round. The trail begins adjacent to Redwood Park, where the playground serves as either prologue or epilogue, depending on the age of one's hiking companions. At just under a mile, the loop requires no particular preparation beyond arriving. Trilliums and other spring wildflowers line the trail in season, admired best without picking. Parking is straightforward at the Redwood Park lot.

Morning Spot
Ramone's Bakery & Cafe
The McKinleyville outpost of Ramone's continues making a persuasive case for organic coffee and fresh sourdough as foundations of civic morale. Doors open at 6:30 AM on weekdays, well before the crowds arrive, and the seasonal scones rotate with gusto. Those who arrive after 8 AM accept what remains.

From the Archives
This week in 1926, the Humboldt Times reported that a "mysterious dancing plague" had overtaken Eureka's ballrooms, with residents spending "unconscionable hours" practicing the Charleston. Local ministers expressed concern about the "moral implications of synchronized knee movements." A century later, The Historic Eagle House hosts line dancing on Wednesdays, suggesting that Eureka's relationship with coordinated movement remains unyielding.

Almanac

Featured Artist
Rachel Robinson
The landscape paintings suggest a painter who has spent considerable time observing the coast in changing weather. Fog, light, and movement drift through the canvases with remarkable ease, and the color palette quietly expands one's understanding of gray. Oil on canvas. The work can currently be seen at Trinidad Art Gallery. Details at rachelrobinsonart.com.
